Clemens mentions his industry since his return from New York; the letter awaiting from Mrs. Fairbanks "It was a scorcher ... It seems I have been using slang ... I wasted a good deal of strategy trying to make Mrs. Beach invite me to call again but I didn't succeed ... I shall come without any invitation.
